Air-conditioning Units – Are you in or out?

Air-conditioning Units – Are you in or out?

If you’re looking for a cooling solution for a commercial, agricultural or construction vehicle then an air-conditioner is the obvious answer. There are two types to choose from – rooftop air conditioners, which are mounted externally on the top of the vehicle, and interior mounted A/C units.

The most important consideration when deciding between these units is which is most compatible with the vehicle in question. Useful information can often be found in the owner manual, whilst a quick inspection for indentations and reinforced areas on the vehicle are reliable indicators about the ideal mounting location.

If your vehicle can accommodate both unit types then it comes down to personal preference. Here’s an overview of the pros and cons of each unit to help you decide.

Rooftop Air Conditioners

✔️ Ideal when space is a consideration for crew or equipment

✔️ Reduced exposure to dirt and dust due to elevated mounting position

✔️ Good airflow distribution in the cab due to the centralised mount position available on the roof

❌ Rooftop units tend to be heavy, making installation difficult and structural reinforcement sometimes necessary

❌ Elevated positioning makes them awkward to maintain and vulnerable to damage from hazards such as low branches

❌ Usually more expensive than interior mounted air conditioners

Interior Mounted Air Conditioners

✔️ Compact proportions

✔️ Comparable cooling performance to larger rooftop units

✔️ Notably cheaper than rooftop units

❌ Compromised output and airflow depending on mounting location

❌ Loss of cab space

❌ Structural reinforcements may be required
